respirator

A mask worn over the face and nose that prevents the inhalation (breathing in) of harmful substances, such as chemical fumes, dust and smoke. A respirator is not the same as a ventilator, which is a machine used to provide artificial respiration for a patient who is unable to breathe on his or her own.
