postherpetic neuralgia (PHN)

Neuralgia is nerve pain that occurs when a nerve is irritated or inflamed. In postherpetic neuralgia, the nerve inflammation is caused by a recent viral infection from herpes zoster (the same virus that causes chickenpox). People who have postherpetic neuralgia often experience a continuous burning sensation.
