Inflammation and small blood clots in a superficial vein, typically caused by injury or infection. Phlebitis usually occurs in the legs. Symptoms of phlebitis include redness, tenderness and pain. A cord-like hardness may also be felt in the vein. This type of inflammation rarely causes clots to break loose and flow into the bloodstream.
