Denture care

Thanks to preventive dental care, people of all ages are enjoying better dental health today than ever before. When injury, illness, gum disease or tooth decay leads to tooth loss, however, dentures may be the best option. Some people need a full set of dentures, while others need only a partial set. To keep your dentures in good shape, follow these suggestions:

Handle your dentures carefully. Stand over a folded towel or a basin of water when handling your dentures. Dropping dentures even a few inches can break a tooth or the denture base.

Clean your dentures daily. Start by rinsing away any loose food particles with cold water. Then, brush your dentures with a soft bristled denture brush to prevent staining and keep your mouth healthy. Try hand soap, mild dishwashing liquid or a denture cleaner recommended by your dentist. Avoid toothpaste, bleach or powdered household cleansers, however. They may be too harsh or abrasive. Keep in mind that dentures can warp if placed in hot water. Never clean your dentures in the dishwasher. If they become dried out, they may change shape and not fit properly.

Consider an ultrasonic cleaner. This type of cleaning should not, however, replace a thorough daily brushing.

Remove your dentures while you sleep at night. Store them in a special container with denture cleaning solution or clean water that's out of reach of children and pets.

Leave repairs to the professionals. Dentures may need to be repaired or replaced due to normal wear and tear, as well as normal mouth changes related to aging. Don't try to adjust or repair dentures yourself. Improperly relined dentures can increase pressure on the jaw, which can cause sores or reddened gums and loss of jawbone tissues.

Consult your dentist for regular dental checkups. Even if you don't have a full set of natural teeth, these regular checkups can help your dentist ensure that your mouth is healthy and your dentures are in good condition and fit properly. Your dentist can also tell you about new treatment options that may be appropriate in your case, such as dental implants.
